Welcome to the online press kit for Shannon Presson
The Story Beneath the Story. The Map You Didn’t Know You Were Following.
Some stories are meant to be outgrown…so they can lead us somewhere unexpected.
Most people don’t realize they’re living inside a story — until it stops working.
A career that once made sense no longer fits. A relationship shifts. An identity that carried them for years begins to feel… off.
However, what looks like confusion on the surface is often something else entirely — not a problem to solve, but rather a portal to step through.
Shannon Presson spent decades building a career that looked, from the outside, exactly like success was supposed to look. She also spent those decades quietly struggling because she began to suspect that the map she was following — the one that said this is how a successful life looks — had been drawn by someone else.
The journey she took to create a new map for herself became a book. That book is “The Unexpected Story.”
“I write stories for everyone who's done everything right and still feels like something essential is missing. Then I help them find out what that something is.”
— Shannon Presson
At a time when many people feel disoriented by lives that no longer align, Shannon offers a different way of understanding change — not as something to fix, but as something to notice.
Her central idea is quietly radical:
You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. Every story you live is your own. The only question is: Are you consciously choosing it, or is it running in the background, influencing your actions without your awareness?
Her book, “The Unexpected Story,” begins in Part One as a fable — the journey of a young girl named Lumina, born with magic she can barely hold onto, who sets off to discover the place she truly belongs. Her journey is the one many of us recognize — not from memory, but from somewhere deeper, more ancient.
In Part Two, the fable becomes a field guide and map, inviting the reader to walk the same path — not through enchanted forests, but through the four invisible stories quietly running their own lives.
What makes Shannon's work distinct is the place she guides from. Not from the other side of the threshold, but from inside it — present to the uncertainty, the disorientation, the particular courage it takes to question a story you've been living inside for decades.
She doesn't offer formulas or transformational promises. She offers herself as a companion and guide alongside you — in the slow, imperfect, utterly worthwhile work of building a relationship with yourself strong enough to withstand the pushback from family, culture, and everything you were taught to believe about who you are supposed to be.
Because no one really wants advice. But no one wants to feel alone in the forest either.
Shannon has spent a lifetime studying the one subject most of us spend our lives avoiding: the mystery of being human. Not from the outside, as an academic or theorist, but from the inside — as someone who has wrestled with fear, outgrown stories, survived collisions, and emerged with something more valuable than answers: a deep, unshakeable trust in the process itself.
“The Unexpected Story” is one expression of that wisdom. But Shannon's larger work — through her coaching practice, her Substack (Navigating Without a Map), and her speaking — is about something even more fundamental: teaching people to live, imperfectly and courageously, inside a life that will always be, at least partly, a mystery.
She also believes in the power of cupcakes.
